For most of Sinora’s life, all she heard was people telling her “no.” Like many other young girls living in the developing world, she grew up in a system that always seemed to be working against her.
At just 13 years of age, Sinora is the main provider for her three siblings and often has to work long hours on top of her schooling in order to help make ends meet for her family. Despite the demands made on her at home, she is a diligent student and can always be found studying during her rare moments of freedom.
As part of our commitment to building brighter futures for the children in our community, every year TCF provides scholarships for a number of driven students. In addition to covering their secondary school expenses and supplies, we provide them with a safe place to live and study at our Scholarship Hostel, located a just short walk from Oldeani Secondary School.
When it came time to select this year’s Kristy LeMond Scholarship recipients, we knew it would be impossible to find anyone more deserving than Sinora.
With unwavering resilience and a fierce sense of determination, Sinora is a social, happy girl whose favorite subjects are English and math.
When asked why she was excited to be selected for a scholarship, Sinora replied “because I will finally have time to learn and be able to do what’s right for me.”
Investing in girls like Sinora is not only the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do. Educating girls has a ripple effect – not only on the well-being of their families – but also on their community, and is one of the most powerful means for eliminating systemic poverty.
Thank you for supporting girls like Sinora and allowing us to tell her “yes.”
